Masnavi Commentary and Interpretation - Book Five

Verses Sessions Timing

Greetings to the friends of the Masnavi

The sessions of commentary and symbolic interpretation of Rumi’s Masnavi with a holistic view, for Book Five, are presented on this page. Book Five can be understood as The Book of Bewilderment; the sixth of Attar’s seven valleys of love. After seeking, love, knowledge, self-sufficiency, and unity, the human being becomes bewildered before the greatness of Truth and the mysteries of the path of love. At this stage, the traveler reaches the truth that not only does he not understand, he cannot understand; for Truth is not something the mind can contain. This bewilderment is not simple ignorance, but arises from seeing the greatness of the Beloved and the inability of partial reason to encompass Truth.

In these sessions, all the verses of Book Five have been read in order. The main emphasis is on the symbols, the mystical meaning of the stories, and the connection among the stories, so that after each story we may understand how that story can help us in walking the path of perfection.

In this view, each story can help us in at least one of these four areas:

  1. Knowing perfection, or knowing the Beloved
  2. Knowing ourselves, or knowing the lover
  3. Knowing the path of love and the obstacles on this path
  4. Knowing and creating longing for stepping onto the path of perfection

I hope that the message and speech of Rumi, the lover, settles upon your heart and soul, and that you benefit from it on your own path toward perfection.
